CHAPTER TWELVE

‘KAYA, I NEED YOU!’ Arno shoved the radio back in its holder and held a hand up at her over the ruckus of teens all clamouring around her, outside the school.

‘What’s up?’ she said, heading his way in her uniform blue T-shirt, swatting a fly from her face while a teenager talked at her a million miles an hour. He watched the sun play on her cheekbones as Kaya took her shoulder gently. ‘Honey, I’ll be back very soon, you can ask me any more questions then.’

She was good with kids, whatever their age. It was hard not to notice.

‘Looks like there’s been a road accident up ahead. We’re the closest medics, we need to go now,’ he said gravely, opening the Jeep door and resisting the impulse to put a hand to her back or steady her as she climbed up quickly, issuing a hurried goodbye to the girl, who was still trying to talk to her about her boyfriend.

They’d just given the presentation at the school that had been postponed a week ago, and the bit about safe sex, by Kaya herself, had sparked a barrage of questions that he’d done his best to answer, but let Kaya handle for the most part. Now it looked as if they were needed for something more pressing. Hopefully it wasn’t too serious.

In seconds he was swerving out of the schoolyard and Kaya was gripping the handle.

‘I’ll never get used to your driving.’ She grimaced as he hurtled through a puddle, and he battled a laugh at the look on her face, told her she would have to get used to it eventually, then realised she probably wouldn’t, seeing as she was leaving at the end of her six-month placement.

Which was exactly the reason he hadn’t made another move on her since that kiss last week. Why go down that path with a volunteer?

It wasn’t easy, staying professional, when all he wanted to do was taste more of her. The other night, when the November rains had slashed his windows and kept him awake, he’d wanted to go to her so badly, but then, she hadn’t made another move either. So here they were, at some kind of torturous stalemate that thickened the air every time they were in the same room...or Jeep. Like now.

A female in her mid-twenties, who’d been established as Sarah from the UK, was sitting on the roadside when they pulled up. A smashed-up hire car lay smoking on its side in the vines. Officer Marlo—whom Arno had known for years—ran at them from the overturned car, shouting something about the back seat. Sarah was crying uncontrollably, clutching her stomach and chest.

‘There’s someone in the back seat,’ Marlo panted, sending Arno’s heart straight up to his mouth. ‘Her partner, Daniel. I couldn’t get the door open. Looks like there’s blood.’

Arno grabbed his backpack, told Kaya to stay with Sarah. The girl was sobbing wretched sobs, struggling for air. Whiplash from the seat belt was evident on her skin, but there could well be internal bleeding.
